By 6 months, everyone in the group stopped using the other machine and preferred this Hamilton Beach Coffee Maker for ease of use.
If you are going to use this in a group setting, this machine has a very nifty feature. You can remove the pot during the brew cycle and it won't drip or make a mess. Some people just cannot wait for the machine to finish brewing and they yank the pot out half way through the brew cycle to pour their cup. That works just fine with this machine, it has a spring that keeps the brewing coffee from leaking out if the pot is removed. The other competing machine did not have this feature and we often have a mess to clean up when someone tries to do the same thing with that machine.
I think it makes better tasting coffee than my old, cheap Mr Coffee that I use at home. I attribute most of that to the fact that this coffee maker seems to get hotter and probably gets more out of the beans.
You could not ask for an easier design to program and brew. It is very straight forward and easy to use. The only thing that will cause confusion is the switch that switches the brewing mode from pitcher to single cup. But it is a physical switch that you have to throw one way or the other, so as long as no one messes with it, it will automatically work like a normal coffee maker and brew the pitcher side.
I have used the travel thermos for 6 months and it has held up well. I even wash it in the dishwasher. The only fault with this whole set up is that the coffee mug lid does not screw on, it just sits on top, not very secure. But it works, I just have to be more careful with this cup, not to tip it over.
I love being able to use the Single Brew side when I am at home, and there is only one coffee drinker! It keeps from having to wash a pot! Since it brews right in my cup.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THE TRAVEL MUG SUPPLIED WITH THE MACHINE.
Finally, not shown in the photo for the machine is the fact that it comes with stacking cups that allow you to brew a 8 oz cup in a glass mug or any size cup really. Simply stack the cups up under the single brew side and sit your coffee cup on top of the stacking cups. This raises your small glass mug to the correct height for brewing.
When I purchase this, I thought the whole reason they were supplying you with a "special" travel mug was because you had to use the "special" mug on the single brew system. Turns out, you can use anything. I am not sure why they even give you the travel mug, it isn't needed.
Also, I love the metal brew basket on the single serve side. It helps the brewer to be able to brew tea, loose coffee grounds or a senso pod. Love the options there!
With all the other reviews, I will just cover what I have found in the last 7 or so months of ownership.
I placed this unit on a ceramic tile holder (easy to clean), and have used it almost every morning since I bought it. There has been no decline in it's ability to make great coffee, (either the "strong" setting or regular). You do, as in most makers, have to clean it (white vinigar or whatever you choose) or it will get bitter. It is relatively easy to clean.
I like the "single cup" option. You can either use pods (prebought) or load your own, quite easy. (I load my own). There are a lot of parts to clean, but it's easy.
In both methods, I use "additives" sometimes to the coffee, cinnamon or baking dark chocolate powder with no issues. I use a gold filter basket, (recommended) and regular filters at times.
The only item I have replaced is the plastic filter holder/basket. The bottom is a relatively cheap assembly, a plastic plug, a spring held by a washer, so that when you remove the pot it stops the flow. The "washer" has come off twice in seven months, once I had to replace whole thing. It can be used, just no way to stop the flow accuarately.
I also "dropped" the carafe and had to replace it. This can be a major difficulty, since Hamilton Beaches parts page shows out of stock all the time. Upon research, Amazon sells it (at times) from the same source, but also is often out of stock. I got lucky, and bought two (one from amazon one from Hamilton Beach, Amazons being cheaper, and got them both general mail fast. These worked great. Nice thing is when you pour the coffee, no or minimal spillage, (I had a Mr Coffee carafe that drove me nuts)
Summary? Great maker, reasonably priced, easy to get parts except carafe. Great coffee, easy to clean and use. Drawback? getting a replacement carafe and filter holder subassembly.. Yes you can get a cuisart which has more universal carafes, but the cost and quality can be different, (my previous cuisinart lasted 8 months and "electrically self destructed"
I am updating this as of 7/14/2017. I have used this daily for about 3 years. I have had no further problem with the basket. The heating plate is now peeling. Overall, the unit still works perfectly. I do clean it once a month at least, especially to remove any buildups despite using distilled water. Another major note, their is a "newer" hamilton beach out there basically replacing this one, so it is probably discontinued. The new one uses K Cups instead of pods. Even still, I will probably replace this one for the new one. I will not by a Kuerig only because I need the ability to make pots of coffee for guests and such. The new version does both.
I wish there were more places to buy pods in stores but I'm going to order a couple of packages off of Amazon. I'm looking forward to using those. Overall I'm glad I made this purchase. It's pretty affordable for the performance and all the settings it has. I'm not really a big coffee aficionado so I don't know if people into something fancier when it comes to coffee would dislike this product, but for every day coffee drinkers it works great.
Top reviews from other countries
I also bought this when it was on sale for $49 prior to Christmas for myself once gifts were bought, and it's absolutely worth the regular price.
I did a lot of research on Hamilton Beach coffee machines because I wanted the dual option of both single brew and a carafe for when I have company (or know I'll be needing an extra push in the day).
Setup is simple, I thoroughly cleaned the product as it outlined in the manual first with vinegar and water on both the single and pot brew sides.
Ever since I've only used the single brew with coffee grounds and with various cups, travel mugs (including the one that came with it) thus far - I've not had to entertain anyone yet that also drive coffee, as my partner doesn't. I hope to try K-cups/pods in th near future just to see how they fair since I've only ever used them in Keurigs before.
Pros:
- fast brew for single cup
- easy set up to switch between single and carafe
- great timer feature and easy to brew stronger coffee with the touch of a button
- looks sharp on the counter and fits our other appliances
-extremely lightweight (I was super surprised because even my parents clunky regular carafe maker weighs more)
- longest warranty on the coffee maker vs. every other company (Keurig and Tassimo are only 1yr, HB has 5 yrs)
- you can use 3 different methods for coffee, single with k-cup, single with coffee grounds, and a 12 cup carafe
- great taste (I never knew my preferred Folgers tasted so good until I got this machine)
Cons:
- I wish the single serve side cold hold just like 10mL more of water in it's holder because I like slightly bigger coffee cups but that's just a personal preference
- Not as 'fast' as it's Keurig and Tassimo counterparts but seriously, if an extra minute is the deciding factor on how long your coffee takes to make, this machine has three times the options of what both its competitors have - literally!
I honestly can't think of anything negative to say about this machine apart from that.
I'm so glad I didn't settle for other HB flex brew and two-way brew options that are in the $80 and $90 range because this is the machine that's worked out all those issues from the previous models.
If you're on the fence of getting this coffee maker, get it. I honestly can't see how you'd regret it.
Update: I'm still using this coffee maker on a daily basis and setting the timer before bed time :) When in a hurry, I love being able to brew just a single cup and heading out. It's still very easy to clean this machine and I can honestly say there's nothing wrong with it or that I'd change.
The only thing I can think of that sort of bothers me is that these coffee makers use Senseo coffee pods. No one in my town stocks these pods. I ordered some coffee pods from overseas, at quite a reasonable price. They worked well, and the coffee was excellent, but it bothers me that I have to order if I want to use the pods (they are rather like round teabags, and the coffee maker allows you to use one for a regular sized cup, or two stacked if you want to use a double sized cup such as the one that comes with the coffee maker).
These are the ones I ordered:
Senseo Moca Gourmet Coffee Pods 48-count Pods
which were about $25 cdn for 48 pods. This coffee is excellent and beats the crud out of Tim Horton's Mocha and is about half the price. I bet I have saved enough money on mochas to pay for half the machine already.
Of course, you don't need to use pods at all. I picked up some flavoured coffees from a local grocery store, and you can just pour the grounds into the single cup basket without the need for a filter or pod.
This is the most expensive coffee maker I have ever purchased as usually I just get the cheap drip coffee makers, but I think this particular machine is well worth the price.
Edit
I have owned this unit for about a year now, and I still like it as much as the day I purchased it. I have stopped using the pods because they are just too expensive. I have been using flavored Folgers coffee. I absolutely love the hazelnut and all my friends seem to like it as well. I also like the French Vanilla, although it's a little too strong in the vanilla flavoring. I have purchased other brands of assorted flavored coffee as well, some are pretty good, but my favorite is still the hazelnut Folgers. I really wish they would make a Mocha flavor.
The coffee maker has been functioning perfectly. It's been easy to keep clean, and the small basket with the screen filter in it for the single serve side works great. No filters required, and the perforations are small enough that you don't get any coffee grinds in you cup.
I highly recommend this coffee maker.
It's easy to use you just flick the switch to full pot or single cup (It does cup with the mug in the picture) You can program it to brew on either side for when you wake up in the morning. Easy to keep clean The appearance is nice. The mug keeps your coffee warm for a minimum of an hour depending on where you are. If you are outside in the middle of a Canadian winter you've got about 20 minutes of hot coffee in the mug. I used to go through about two tins a week of coffee with my old coffee maker most of which was wasted from not finishing pots because I do not like cold, burnt, or microwaved coffee. With this machine I have cut my coffee purchase down by half in the first month of buying it. And with the 14oz mug I almost finish the whole cup before it gets cold. Still some waste but not much. Also another feature I like is the drip cup for the mug has a cup under it the flips over to be used as a stand for smaller mugs.. The basket for the pot side needs filters but the side for the mug does not you just pull it out and it doubles as a scoop. It is pricey but not as expensive as a tassimo and keurig but for people like me it's more like an investment because you do save money because you don't waste as much coffee. I recommend it not only to budget friendly families but to everyone.
